It didn’t seem like a good day for a photo shoot when I woke up that morning. The day before the winter solstice…rainy, cold, dark.

We headed downtown anyway, hoping hoping hoping that we wouldn’t get caught in a downpour.

We didn’t! Everything turned out beautifully. And one of the most beautiful things about this photo shoot was how their mother didn’t tell them to smile and say cheese, didn’t tell them to stay out of the mud, didn’t tell them to hold still and look pretty. She stood back and watched them play, and just let them be.  These girls were happy to run and explore, happy to stop and pose for the camera every once in awhile, and happy to enjoy a cold and muddy adventure in a wide open space.
